Pet owners will be given six months to register after the rules are rolled out in Bangalore, BBMP animal husbandry wing officials said.

Pet registration, which has been optional up to this point, will recognise pet parents who have a licence.

The procedure is meant to increase accountability and responsibility and prevent unlawful breeding and animal abandonment.

“It has become more fashionable than responsible for having a pet. Licensing will aid in this correction, “Manjunath Shinde, Joint Director, said (Animal Husbandry).

Manjunath Shinde was speaking in an interaction with animal activists and veterinarians.

While microchipping and neutering pets are required before licencing, abandoning animals can result in fines of up to Rs 1,000.

Indie dogs will also be eligible for a licence cost waiver to encourage the adoption of local breeds.

“Obtaining a birth certificate or paying taxes should be as natural as registering a pet. We are not doing this to instil fear in pet owners or to punish them.

The BBMP will be able to assist them more quickly if they register, “Special Commissioner for Health and Animal Husbandry D Randeep stated.

While Bengaluru is known as the most pet-friendly cosmopolitan metropolis, animal activists claim that several issues still need to be addressed.

They also suggested that apartment associations be more accepting of pet accommodations.
