India’s Atal Tunnel Sets World Record as Longest Highway Tunnel above 10,000 Feet

Rohtang, India – The Atal Tunnel, spanning an impressive 9.02 kilometers, has achieved a remarkable feat!

Situated at an altitude surpassing 10,000 feet, this tunnel connects Manali with Lahaul.

The World Book of Records in London officially recognized it as the longest single-tube highway tunnel at such a high elevation.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) proudly announced that they had received a certificate from the World Book of Records, confirming this extraordinary achievement.

The Ministry of Defence also shared the news, emphasizing that the Atal Tunnel has now received official certification as the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet from the World Book of Records.

This iconic tunnel stands as an engineering marvel amidst the Himalayas.

It has proven to be a game-changer for the remote Lahaul and Spiti districts, providing them with safe and all-weather connectivity to the rest of India.

The tunnel’s south portal is located near Manali, reaching a height of 9,840 feet, while the north portal resides in the Lahaul Valley at Sissu, towering at an elevation of 10,171 feet.

Aside from ensuring safe travel, the tunnel has significantly reduced the distance between Manali and Keylong by 46 kilometers, resulting in a time-saving of over two hours.

According to reports, the construction of this groundbreaking tunnel incurred a cost of INR 3,200 crore. Notably, it also holds the distinction of being the world’s first tunnel to offer 4G internet connectivity.

To enhance security, CCTV cameras are installed at 60-meter intervals within the tunnel, with surveillance being monitored from a control room. Furthermore, emergency exit doors have been strategically placed every 150 meters along the tunnel’s length.

The Atal Tunnel has transformed the region’s transportation landscape, providing unprecedented accessibility and paving the way for progress and development.

Its completion is a testament to India’s prowess in engineering and infrastructure, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s infrastructure accomplishments.
